The Watergate Scandal was one of the biggest scandals of the decade. One morning are few people were found in the Democratic National Committee office in the Watergate building. What made this burglary different from most was this conducted by President Richard Nixon. They were caught attempting to rewire phones and steal confidential documents. Nixon did many things to cover his tracks, including raising “hush money” for the burglars , trying to prevent the FBI from investigating, and destroying any evidence about him. When an impeachment trial was put into play and before anything could happen , Nixon resigned. In 1974 his successor Gerald Ford took his place.

Gerald Ford was born on July 14, 1913 in Omaha, Nebraska. He became the 38th President of the United States in 1974 and served until 1977. Prior to this he was the 40th Vice President of the United States below President Richard Nixon. After Nixon resigned, Gerald Ford was chosen to replace him. He was then given the responsibility of dealing with the Watergate Scandal. He decided to grant Nixon an unconditional pardon for any wrongdoing against the United States. He also granted a pardon to those who protested against being drafted. Ford was later defeated in 1976 by Jimmy Carter in the presidential election. |
Among the few Crisis's in the 1970's was the American Hostage Crisis. The AHC lasted 444 days and took place 35 years ago. Approximately 52 Americans were held. The Iranian government was overthrown and Shan fled to the U.S. to seek medical attention. The U.S. welcomed him with open arms and gave him medical assistance as needed. This was seen as an act of betrayal to Iran. In return they captured the 52 Americans and held them threateningly. The American government sent many rescue boats, helicopters, and other vehicles to attempt to rescue them. Unfortunately eight Americans were killed due to failure of "Operation Eagle Claw". Shan was later given immunity and soon after died. The hostages were later released and the same day President Reagan was elected on 1/20/81.
