During the eighties, the rights for women and african americans slowly advanced. Meanwhile, rights for other minorities such as the disabled and african americans broadened. The institutionalized persons act passed in 1980’s, originated from a previous but not wildly successful act. This act gives the U.S Attorney General the right to look through places such as prisons, juvenile correction facilities, publicly operating nursing homes and institutions for people with psychiatric or developmental disabilities. It’s purpose is to allow the U.S Attorney General to find deficiencies in these, so that they can be corrected and run properly. In the 1980’s, since we did not have much understanding for things such as other sexualities (such as bisexual and gay rather than straight), we often were lead to do certain things that may not of been the best. Another even that passed in order to give rights to minorities, was the affirmative action backlash. This act however, was not so popular. The affirmative action backlash consisted of economic and education opportunities given to woman as well as other minorities. President Ronald Reagan cut funding for the Equal Employment Opportunity Commision as well as the Civil Rights Division of the U.S Justice Department. Because of this, cases made by the EEOC (Equal Employment Opportunity Commision) dropped a lot, about 60 percent in 1984. Cases that were created by the U.S Justice Department with the topic of segregation in schools and housing didn’t come up anymore, they mainly disappeared.

Since the 1960’s, the topic of abortion has been very controversial, but in the 1980’s is when the anti-abortionist became more active. They called it, “Operation Rescue.” When the fundamentalist of Operation Rescue began to harass, block, and attack women trying to entering abortion clinics, feminist rallied to escort the women. This movement did succeed in defending women’s right to have a legal and safe abortion. Yet some women did not in fact gain this right. Some women who were suppose to receive safe abortions, were cheated of that. A woman by the name of Gloria Aponte was a young woman, only twenty years old. She visited Stamford, connecticut to receive a safe and legal abortion on April 29th, 1986. A few hours later, she died from Hemorrhage which is bleeding to death. She was one of many who were victims.
